My Ruin- The Brutal Language

The most merciful thing about this CD is that it is short, clocking in at just over 30 minutes. While lead singer Tarrie B. has built a devoted following, first in the rap-metal outfit Manhole and then later in metal act My Ruin, the fact of the matter is that My Ruin's music is, by and large, completely overrated, a lackluster rip-off of female-fronted '90s acts like L7. "Spilling Open" is this album's saving grace, incorporating a head-banging bass groove and some hardcore-influenced vocal screams, but it's not enough to make up for the ghastly nu-metal of "Vince Vaughn," the self-indulgent guitar solos of "The Devil Walks," or the played-out spoken-word cover of Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy." While hints of hardcore punk, as evidenced by the raw-throated gusto of "Summer of Hell," elevate this slightly above the rest of the metal throwbacks, there are a number of bands who do the same kind of thing much better than My Ruin. While a female lead singer adds a bit of novelty, this is still bad cock rock at heart.
