Last year, we wrote a rave review of Sammal's debut album Sammal. Now, they are back with a second release – an EP this time. And again, their choice of title for their release is pretty straightforward, just No. 2.

Three of the five songs featured on the EP are old demo songs, which were re-recorded at the same session with a new track “Vankina varisten” and a cover of Aphrodite’s Child’s “Magic Mirror," translated as “Peilin taikaa,” in the summer of 2013.

As compared to the debut album Sammal, No. 2 sounds more like classic rock and less like prog. The rock and roll feeling dominates this album more than anything else, and Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple seem to be looming around the corner.

While turning back to classic rock bands might sound as if Sammal are jumping on the bandwagon of retro rock bands, these Finns are greatly talented musicians – and whatever style they are working on turns into gold.

Sammal are the masters of strong melodies, solid composition – all the while impregnated with their typical vintage sound.

No.2 is only 20 minutes long – and tastes to more. The next full-length album will be released during the coming winter, and I'm eagerly looking forward to it.
