Hailing from Tirol, the Austrian sympho metal band Serenity have released their fourth album war of Ages, their first album on a major label.

War of Ages is a very good symphonic metal album, but sounds very familiar: this could have been Kamelot during the days of Karma and Epica.

Although War of Ages contains virtually no new elements, it is a solid symphonic metal album. The lyrical content is closely related to Sabaton. A very nice addition to the soundscape on War of Ages are the female vocals by Clémentine Delauney.

The lead vocals by Georg Neuhauser are of very high quality. I was even more surprised to see that Georg is combining his PhD research with his musical career in Serenity. Respect!

War of Ages contains 10 tracks, spanning from ballads to uptempo double-bass tracks. The epic opening track “Wings of Madness” sets the tune for the album, and immediately refers to Kamelot as well. The second track “The Art of War” borrows from Sabaton and Nightwish, while heavily relying on keyboards.

The ballad “For Freedom's Sake” is a beautiful resting point after some violent metal – and a place where Georg can showcase his vocal talent. The fast-paced “Age of Glory” is an invitation to some major headbanging sessions.

Another noteworthy track is “Legacy of Tudors”, a metal-version of the folk-classic “Pastime with Good Company” - a great composition, and great metal track!

To conclude: Serenity sound like the younger brother of Kamelot. If you like symphonic and melodic metal, War of Ages will not disappoint you.
