The Sorrow, Austria's most successful metal band, have released their 4th studio album, Misery Escape. With their blend of metalcore and Swedish melodic death metal, the Austrian quartet have crafted an album that delivers furious metal and catchy melodies side-by-side.

One of the key features of the album are the vocals – these range from distorted to clean, with most songs featuring a catchy refrain that makes you want to hum along. Electronic elements are used as an additional spice.

The album opens with “Retracing Memories”, and “The Escape”, brutal tracks which immediately connects the work of The Sorrow to the recent releases by In Flames. “Burial Bridge” contains some of the better melodic guitar work from the album, reminiscent of the Gothenburg death metal from the late 90s.

My Oblivion”, with its dark blast drums is balanced by the deeply melodic “A Reason” and “Buried In The Deep”, a track which will work very well on the summer festivals to have the crowd shouting along. The beautifully atmospheric outro of “Buried In The Deep” deserves a special mention.

On “A Thin Red Line” and “Perspectives” the vocalist Mätze delivers fireworks: grunts, screams, clean vocals – his vocal chords are twisted and torn to add raw emotion to these solid metal tracks.

Inspiration from the more recent work by Dark Tranquillity can be heard on the pounding “Lost Chapters”. The two last tracks “Dead Home” and “Follow The Lights” are in-your-face metalcore with heavier-than-usual riffs that close the album with a bang.

If you like metalcore and/or melodic death metal, Misery Escapeis an album you should check out: a great balance between melody and raw metal, catchy choruses and groovy guitar solos.
