Artist: Eternal Descent
Album: Losing Faith
Eternal Descent is the work of one man that goes by the name of Llexi Leon. Llexi is from the UK and the music on "Losing Faith" is fantasy gothic metal with guest female vocals by Elysha West. The music on this release was written as a soundtrack for a comic book based around the characters Lyra and Sirian. Listening to the album you can hear that Llexi is trying to showcase his talent on the guitar and the programmed music is used as a backdrop to give the album an epic sound. Llexi's guitar talents are obvious as you listen to the album, playing solos that will bring comparisons to Steve Vai and similar artists. The problem I have with this style of guitar playing is that it sounds like it is played without feeling and has a very mechanical feel to it. Llexi's playing suffers from this at times as well.
Besides the guitar riffs on "Losing Faith", the vocals of Elysha West are also worth noting. She definitely has talent but in this genre there are a ton of female vocalists with talent. They all start to mesh together at times and Elysha's vocals are no exception. While she is really talented and her vocals fit the music perfectly, there just isn't anything there that is new or groundbreaking. Overall, "Losing Faith" is a decent album and the comic book soundtrack concept is an interesting idea. If you like gothic metal with a lot of guitar solos and female vocals, then this will definitely be an album for you.
