Artist: Korpiklaani
Album: Tervaskanto
Label: Napalm Records

Along with Finntroll, Korpiklaani which if Finnish for forest clan, is probably the most well known of all of the humppa influenced folk metal bands out there. Humppa for those that don't know by now is a form of music very similar to polka that is popular in Finland where Korpiklaani resides. Released last year by Napalm Records, Tervaskanto is the fourth full length from this band that boasts an impressive seven members. Using instrument not usually found in metal like the jouhikko, kantele and accordion, they are able to mix them well with traditional instruments like the guitar, bass and drums. With songs like Let's Drink, Nordic Feast, and Viima which translates to Draught, they have always been able to, for me at least, evoke images of downing mugs of ale and carrying on in a bar full of your closest friends. Even though Finnish is only a very small part of my heritage, they are able to draw out a feeling of pride through their traditional melodies and memorable choruses. Though Tervaskanto sounds similar to their other releases except for a slightly darker feel, and there isn't much on the album that is very groundbreaking, I don't think this is why Korpiklaani release this music. I think they make their music for the exact feeling that I said I get from the music. They make it to show pride in their country and ancestors, and to pay homage to bygone eras. Tervaskanto is a typical release from these guys so if you liked the other ones, you'll like this one and if you haven't heard of these guys yet this is just as good a place to start as any.
