Artist: The Opposite Sex CD Title: Self Titled Label: Self-Released Reviewer:Julie Johnson Date: 7-31-06 |
The Opposite Sex definitely has an old-school goth punk sound going on. Although the CD was recorded in 2005 it brought be back to 1985 during the time of The Cure and good our deathrock days. Their music is pure and straight forward dark rock. Good old guitar, live drums, thick bass pretty much does the work and the band stays clear of electronics. “Dollhouse” was the bands opening track and it definitely pulled you in but I am not sure if all the other songs lived up to the driving force of “Dollhouse”. If I had to choose another standout track like “Dollhouse” that really got me excited to hear more of this old school sound was “The Sound”. This track was an up-tempo song that worked well and I could see being a crowd pleaser during a show. It had a little kick and power to it and some nice feedback at the end. “All Consuming”, I felt had the most Cure influence. This track reminded me a lot of “A Forest”, and had that thick sound. It kept me intrigued wondering how their song is going to sound since I keep thinking of The Cure here. Well, it did have the catchiness of The Cure, but it wasn’t too bad either. I don’t see this band playing at an industrial club, well maybe, but more in a venue open to more alternative rock sounding bands. The Opposite Sex have potential and have some decent songs under their belt but I would like to hear some more stronger songs like “Dollhouse” and that approach.
