Artist:Reliquary CD Title:Winter World Label: Final Joy Records Reviewer:Du Nord Date: 10-15-06 I met Reliquary initially through Myspace and immediately thought they looked and sounded, well, interesting. I downloaded their first mp3’s and scoured their web site for freebie remixes and samples. I thought it was awesome and different to put a classical tune like “Lakme” to the sounds of dark delight (track ten). The CD starts with a fragment of the aforementioned to entice us to what was to come. And come it did with two great tracks in a row starting with “Destroy” and ebbing into my favorite, “Tell Me”. “Tell Me” is so descriptive and eloquent, speaking of confession and pain amidst a backdrop of Suriels’ winding and slithering basslines, Loki’s ethereal and haunting guitar work and (of course) Kara’s stunning and studied vocal reparte. This threesome wreaks awful delight on and off the dancefloor and is poised to make quite an impact on the Gothic scene. Back to the music. Songs like “Trinity”, “Winterworld”, “Dreams Torn Away”, the incredible “Lost in Thought” create a beautiful grim mood with which to dance or to cavort with shadows. The final track is, of course, a revisiting to the first, bringing us full circle with the full rendition of “Lakme” which shows the great range and delicacy of Kara’s voice intermingled with Loki and Suriel’s excellent composition skills. A heady and moody mixture of surreal pleasure awaits the listener and I encourage you to ask for it by name with your local DJ’s. Visit Reliquary at www.reliquary.org |
