Oh! A band from my fatherland, I must review that one myself now, don't I? Not that the colleagues would do a bad job, ofcourse not! It's just something silly in that head of mine: 'They're Belgian, I'm Belgian, I want to do the review.' It's as simple as that.
Poesie Noire has been around almost my entire life. Winning the Belgian rock contest 'Breekend' back in 1985 gave Poesie Noire the opportunity to be on the same bill with bands like Dead can Dance and The Sisters Of Mercy. In 1992 Posie Noire ceased to exist, but due chanching of careers, Jo and Marianne started Poesie Noire again. Since 2006 there was an announcement a cd would be released, but we had to wait for that untill 2010. Than, finally, 'Sense of Purpose' was released.
This album is a bit more towards the pop music instead of EBM, electro or wave they created back in the '80's and early nineties, but when you grow older, you become more gentle, but they're still children of today and that's what is glancing through. The lyrics and music are important to them, it had to be a bit danceable but with the respect of theirr legacy. You can definitely hear this, you their roots are in the 80's, they have that typical '80's sound to their music, but a bit more 'poppy' .
'We'll die Dancing' has really the potential of becoming a club hit, but opener 'The air' became my favorite on the album because I think it had a more dreamy touch to it, something that appealed to me more back in my childhood and that song instantly brings me back to those days. They also included a little German on this new album, this you can hear in the song 'Die Sonne' (The Sun). If you think that's a bit odd: Marianne just loves the German language and has fun childhood memories about german TV shows. besides, it's one of Belgium's 3 official languages as well, so it's not that weird that it's been used now and than.
Unfortunately, Poesie Noire is occupied with their daily jobs and there aren't many live performances planned in the (near) future. On Halloween they had a show on Belgian Wave festival 'Sinners day' (Hasselt), but no new gigs have been announced so far.
So, if you see Poesie Noire plan a performance nearby by, I'd really go see them if I where you, but in meanwhile, enjoy 'Sense of purpose' to the fullest.
