Of the major bands of the early gothic scene, Clan of Xymox seem to be the only ones moving deeper into the scene's stereotypes instead of further away from them, as this digital single shows. "Emily" isn't a bad song, per se; its moody keyboards, electronic beats and deep vocals are well-suited to the dance floor. On the other hand, with lyrics like "Can't you see? / I'm in love with Emily," it's basically a retread of the same lovelorn themes the band did with songs like "Louise" two decades ago, only with less shimmering guitars and less lyrical depth. The band's own remix of the song remedies the former complaint, if not the latter, while the "Contrast Mix" gives things a sparser take, emphasizing the snares and synth-strings. Filling out the single is exclusive track "Chemistry," another stereotypical gothic break-up song with clean guitar strums, chiming keyboards, and club beats. Not bad stuff, and if you're a hardcore Clan of Xymox fan, there's no doubt you'll enjoy this. If you're just discovering the band, though, do yourself a favor and forgo this one in favor of their early albums on the 4AD label.
