Siouxsie - Mantaray
Shedding career-spanning partner Budgie, just-Siouxsie musters a
solid solo release sure to please fans of both the Banshees and the
Creatures. While pulling obvious pages from each band's history, the
disc is surprisingly fresh and vibrant. The album starts strong as
Siouxsie belts out "Into a Swan," and "About to Happen." These hard-
hitting and club-ready songs are enough to give the Creatures "2nd
Floor" a run for its money. She follows with "Here Comes the Day,"
in a Cabaret-gone-oh-so-wrong jaunt as only she can deliver. Fans
have been longing for this ever since the song "Peek-a-Boo" caught
their ears in 1988. The momentum holds with the nasty groove
"Loveless." But aside from meeting her followers' lofty
expectations, the real surprise comes as the album twists into some
sultry, down-tempo numbers reminiscent of Lamb's fretless bass
arrangements or Portishead's "Glory Box." Siouxsie's voice is sultry
and sensitive, dipping in and out of swimming strings and shimmering
countermelodies for the song "If It Doesn't Kill You." These tender
tracks are simply among her best works to date and cinch the deal: a
must have for any Siouxsie fan. - Adrian James
