Other Day- Karmapolis

Eschewing the mechanical sound that typifies much of Europe's electronic music, Other Day focus instead on creating heavenly and organic textures. Comparable to the softer side of fellow German band Diary Of Dreams, Other Day's music incorporates beats, but the centerpiece to their sound is not rhythm but harmony. Full of lush synth strings, heavenly chimes, and floating pianos, tracks like "Armenia" and "Du Gehst" evoke a sense of melancholy, but these gently drifting harmonies are less reminiscent of graveyards than the cloud-filled mountain peaks of artist Caspar David Friedrich; think airy, not earthy. "Natales" in particular has an otherworldly feel to it, incorporating vintage synth arpeggios that recall the outer space meanderings of early electronic pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. There's also a symphonic touch present, as evidenced by the staccato violins and operatic vocals of "Hauchendes Zart" and the icy bombast of "Belvedere." Between the subtle but rich arrangements of synth pads, the echoing drumbeats, and the dramatic echoing vocals, fans of European darkwave at its most beautiful will find the trip to Karmapolis more than worth the journey.
