ARTIST: Slicnaton ALBUM: Noisefloor EP LABEL: New Music Solutions REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 11-26-09 A brief, six-song collection of sonic experiments, this EP delves into minimalism, glitch and experimental noise. Created largely using pure electronic tones, the compositions here nonetheless take on a more evocative character; the buzzes and whines on "Drone Milk" and "Someone Interrupted," in particular, sound like chamber music pieces re-arranged for a quartet of electric hedge-trimmers, and "Over My Shoulder" features raw studio-generated percussive sounds that recall distant hammering, like an artist working on a metal sculpture somewhere in the distance. At times, things get grating; "Just Us" starts off with some fairly painful glitches and pulsing tones, but thankfully fades into higher-pitched chirping; "Jones," though almost a pure glitch composition, is far less painful to listen to, though you may double-check your stereo to see that it's playing correctly. Intentionally difficult stuff, Slicnaton's compositions will appeal to fans of such avant-garde composers as Stephen Stapleton, Andrew Liles, and Ivan Pavlov.
