The Membrane Conspiracy “Mutual Hallucination Project” (MathBat Records), 2003

“An eclectic release from a mysterious artist whose electronic minimalism is programmed around dark lyrics & subtle vocals. “Freak Affirmation” & “Your Masters Have Forsaken You” opens up the disc w/ weird chanting backed by heavy drum programming, brooding sound loops, & even weirder vocal distortion.Continuing forth in a whispering cold wave is “All My Demons Lovers” which doesn’t lighten things up much more & then “Dream Death” breaks the mold w/ acoustic guitar & plays along a more stripped down apocalyptic folk ballad. “Byzantium & America” contains some great foreboding sampling pushing right into the next track, “Finger”, which is a static of samples & hypnotic sounds w/ the constant chant of the song title. Very cool & quite unnerving! “Sanctuary from Faith” is another slow, whispering piece of raw avant-garde which questions our point in life. The amusing & eyebrow raiser of “You Have the Gentle Eyes of My Dead Guitar Instructor” is the last cut on this cd that shows a dry sense of humor w/ sincere & deep felt lyrics.Unnerving mellowness & perfect for after dark listening.” www.mathbat.com [-Marcos-]
