The Finnish band E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr spent many years preparing their first album Kometenbahn. An ode to the Kosmische Musik from the seventies, these gentleman seem to have enjoyed exploring the soundspaces one can create with synthesizers.

The tone of the music is warm, organic and welcoming – all layered with a sci-fi sauce. It makes great background music for working – but it fails to catch my full attention. With that, I simply mean that I find Kometenbahn a bit boring. It's beautiful, cosmic and spacey, but it feels dull at the same time.

Looking at the background of these gentlemen, however, one can expect that their regular audience would be quite surprised and delighted by this side project. Kimi Kärki comes from the doom metal scene as well as the psychedelic prog. Ismo Virta plays folk prog and dark ambient. Pertti Grönholm is known for his techno, house and ambient projects, and Jaakko Penttinen has a background in various punk bands, but plays ambient and space music nowadays. A colorful collection of backgrounds, that is.

Kometenbahn is an album that should be enjoyed loud, on a surround system or with headphones. Many layers go unnoticed at a first listen – from the icy arrivals at distant planets and the whispering and muttering of friendly foreign beings to the deep, pounding, reverberating, warm bass tones that almost feel as if you are traveling in a womb-like spaceship.

E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr have composed a spacey, cosmic album, pulling from their various backgrounds and using many layers of hidden treasures into their Kometenbahn – yet too much of the drowsy fiddling can be a challenge to the attention span of the listener.
