After a hiatus of almost ten years, EBM act Sphere Lazza is back together with a new single entitled “Ultimate Abyss.” The song itself is solid at the very least, with clean vocal work over fairly standard electronic beats giving way to a soft, spaced-out chorus juxtaposed intriguingly with shouted lyrics. There are also several remixes that play with different rhythmic patterns. More interesting, though, are the bonus tracks. While “Terminal Ferocity” is nicely angry mid-tempo EBM, “Distance” and “Dark Enemy” are unexpectedly melodic and light-hearted, closer to synthpop than industrial. While singer David Trousdale’s raspy vocals are a little more edgy than what people have come to expect from conventional synthpop, it makes for a nice contrast with programmer Tony Spaz’s upbeat keyboard work. Sphere Lazza’s reunion has already created a fair amount of buzz, and judging from the first offerings from the newly reunited duo, they have some interesting things up their sleeves.
