The Invincible Spirit takes a nostalgic look back at their extensive career with their latest release, Anthology; a comprehensive collection of singles and rarities. The Invincible Spirit made a heavy mark on goth/industrial dance-floors in the mid 1980’s but ultimately fell apart in the 1990’s. Now, after a few successful reunions, The Invincible Spirit hold true to their name with Anthology, rehashing old ground and sharing promising new material as well.
While I was initially thrown off by Anthology’s lack of chronology, the flow of the release is near perfection, fluidly moving from older to newer and back again. The material starts as far back as 1984, though most of the release spans between 1988 and 1992. The Invincible Spirit’s work here strongly resembles much of the darkwave sensibilities of the era, especially those of Martin Bowes’ masterful work with Attrition, bringing back a rush of welcome memories and reflection.
Anthology makes for a well-rounded glimpse into the works of The Invincible Spirit, showcasing the best and the rarest tracks while also presenting newer, unreleased material. There is enough compiled in this release to appease both old and new fans alike, and is—for once—an anthology not wasted on an undeserving band.
