While Siva Six’s music is squarely rooted in the harsh EBM sound that’s gained such a popular resurgence lately, the duo’s level of quality control lifts them well above cookie-cutter territory. The band’s debut does borrow a bit from Hocico’s formula – creepy horror film intros that give way to stomping, high-BPM assaults – but it’s all done brilliantly, from the drum ‘n’ bass overtones of “Awayk” to the martial space invasion feel of “Nihil Before Me.” “Nexus 6” uses a sampled brass section to create a decidedly filmic mood, while the ghostly instrumental “Another Dead World” is enough to give YelworC a run for their money. Unlike many bands in this genre, Siva Six leave the vocals fairly clear; while there’s plenty of processing and harshness going on, tracks like “Streetcleaner” and “Fire Walks With Me” are mixed cleanly enough that the lyrics are still intelligible, giving fans a chance to shout along with the chorus as they stomp their boots to the beat. Fans of Suicide Commando, Grendel and Psyclon Nine should particularly enjoy Siva Six; dance music doesn’t come much more evil than this.
