I guess if you asked most people for their initial opinion of Licky, then most people would categorise them as a joke band. Licky probably don’t actually care what anyone thinks of them though.
The NYC duo unleash a barrage of electro-clash punk noise, which amazingly appears to have been produced by uber-guru John Fryer (he of Depeche Mode & NIN production fame) This is a mash-up of filthy, synth-driven disco punk, kind of like The Bloodhound Gang cybernetically welded to a circuit-bent Speak ‘n’ Spell
Humour is at the forefront of Licky’s music. Well you wouldn’t expect song titles such as ‘All the Young Dorks’ and ‘Pretend to be Gay’ to be serious soul-searching anthems would you now?
To be honest, the key as to whether you will like Licky is not going to revolve around their level of musical proficiency (which incidentally isn’t that bad), but more about whether you appreciate their particular brand of humour.
A quick test then. If your preferred brand of humour is intelligent, black comedy, satirising popular political figures with a wry smile and a knowing wink, you will hate Licky – probably. If however you find hilarity in farting, cheap sexual innuendo about Goth Girls, and gags about pretending to be gay you’re going to love them. I’m somewhere between the two I’m afraid.
