Fredrik Croona and Kettil prepare to release Cinema Bizarre, the follow-up to last year's Freakshow. Croona began Project Rotten as an offshoot of Menschdefekt in July 2009. Since then, they've released four EPs and Cinema Bizarre will be the second full-length album.
This is straight-on, no-frills robo-stomp. An important note here: I will try never to use three hyphens in one sentence again. Nine tracks are in C-minor, and they nearly all hang in the 130-140 BPM range. Each song has the same vocal distortion which makes the lyrics harder to discern. What I can make out sticks to traditional oonce-oonce topics: misanthropy ("Fuel My Hatred"), fear ("Borrowed Time") and vaguely political anxiety.
If you like mid-90's :Wumpscut: and/or Leaether Strip, jump on this. The untitled twelfth track has no vocals and reminds me of music for an Atari 5200 video game console. (Not a cheap shot; the 5200 was a big step forward in Atari home graphics.) Three songs have guest shots from Javi Ssagittar, Preemptive Strike and Johan Van Roy.
Project Rotten offers EBM with no pretense. Put on your creeper boots and stomp the floor flatter than it was.
