I'd like to preface this review by saying I am a dance guy, I like dance music, I like trance, and techno, and all things electronic. That being said, Burning Heaven, the label debut from Distorted Memory is definitely a dance floor killer in the industrial world. Hard hitting bass lines and epic ensembles clashing to make some very angry stomping.
Swallowing The Sun definitely follows in the same lines as Burning Heaven. A lot of reviews I had read before the North American release were saying that it is a drastically different sound and that the world sounds were so shocking, etc. I do not hear it. I really enjoy the middle eastern sounds and throat singing aspect, but under all of that, it is an amazing progression from Burning Heaven. All of the aspects that I enjoyed from Distorted Memory are still there – the heavy bass lines, the epic ensembles, and the over all dance floor element.
There is something to be said about the vocal style change. I am a huge black metal guy. A lot of people try to mix the black metal screaming, which is characterized by a higher pitched scream with little to no vocal effects, and it usually fails horribly. Swallowing The Sun is the first and only album, in the industrial field, that I have heard that successfully pulls it off. I really really enjoyed it.
