Artist: Assemblage 23 CD Title:“Spark Maxi-single” Label: Metroplis Records Reviewer: Robert Eaton Date: 12/06/09
Assemblage 23’s Tom Shear has long been known for his signature melodic EBM. The “Spark” single features 3 tracks from the “Compass” plus remixes by Combichrist and Jade of Blaqk Audio. An update on Assemblage 23’s website states that single (limited to 1,000 copies) has already sold out, but is still available as a digital download. Aside the album version of “Spark”, the single features the bouncy, electronic “Hellicopter Girl,” as well as a bassy dance-track, “ The Poison Moon.” “The Poison Moon” features a surprisingly lush chorus. Combichrist’s” remix of “Spark” is aggressive, but spare, and gives a lot of room for the vocals to breathe. Jade’s (Blaqk Audio) remix of “Spark” cuts up the original into a somewhat jarring sonic collage. For fans of Assemblage 23, this is a worthwhile purchase. It features strong songs and 2 remixes that, if not great, are certainly adept. Assemblage 23 is currently on the road in the US with live members Paul Seegers and Kevin Choby in support of the album “Compass,” with a European and a Canadian tour in the works as well. https://www.myspace.com/officialassemblage23
