Cue to Recall "Polarity" Prussia Digital Records.
It's easy to do synth-pop which is reductive, and
seriously bland. Synth Pop, like any kind of pop
music, is generally music that the quality is reduced
for easy sale. But not always, a good album is a good
album, even if it is relying on a proven formula, a
good album is a good album. Cue to Recall mixes vocals
that recall Covenant, but unlike a lot of cookie
cutter synth-pop, with some pretty inventive
programming, courtesy of synth miester, Bernd Lohse.
Generally, I'm not a fan of synth-pop, but this album
really has it's moments. Cue to Recall, doesn't tend
to vary far from the sucessful formula of a good dance
beat, and a great hook in the chorus. Cue to Recall,
sounds like Wolfshiem, but with more eclectic
programming. The song "In Affect" for example would
pack a dance floor, following a good song. There's
plenty on this album to move a dance-floor, and plenty
of sing-along choruses. Obviously Serge, Cue to
Recall's singer, knows how to create a hook that
sticks with you long after the song stops playing.
The highlight for the album comes at the end, the song
"Pieces" has a driving beat that recalls some early
VNV, and out of nowhere there is this gorgeous chorus.
It's the sort of song that might bring you to the
floor even if you don't know the song. The key piece
of the equation is the emotive vocals. It's really
pretty haunting.
All in all, there's some songs on here that a DJ would
do well to be adding to their playlists. There's some
great moments on this album that will do all the right
things for a dance floor. There's something to say
about an album that takes a sucessful formula and does
it well, that's the sort of album this is in my mind.
There's some great songs on the album, nothing
ground-breaking, but it's an enjoyable listen.
