Cold, minimal, and at times a bit repetitive, Headscan’s newest EP is nonetheless darkly hypnotic. The original version of the title track is an eerie mechanical electro piece, while the “Biometric” and “Protocol” mixes of the song delve into techno and trance territory. There’s also a remix by Component; with its pounding EBM rhythm, it manages to sound even more industrialized and robotic than Headscan’s original version. “Sentinel” is a brand new track that mixes elements of hard trance and EBM, with vocals that sort of ripple in waves across chilling synthesizers. Montreal project Dance Against The Machine offers a remix of this track that sets its initial bleakness against nonstop throbbing house beats. The disk finishes with “Metadata,” a more experimental piece that explores dark ambient industrial and occasional flourishes of world music. It’s all good material, although many of the versions of “Dead Silver Sky” are so similar that this is really a must-have only for Headscan fans and club DJs.
