Dirty Settlements, the second full-length from LA-based outfit Anchors for Architects, is an impressive foray into unconventional rock territory. Unpredictability is the key here, whether it be "in the nineties" journey from an almost riot grrrl reminiscent burst of energy to a plodding early-Breeders-esque violin outro or the transformation of "rattlesnake eggs" from punchy, seemingly-punk-influenced rock to a funky bass groove. That's not to say the album's without its more straightforward rock offerings, the compelling "his tambourine will kill you" and the downright moody, violin-laden "books 1 R" being prime examples. Whatever the case, the disc's 15 tracks are, more often than not, compelling and well written, also forming a rather cohesive whole.

From all-out jams with momentary explosions of intensity to mellower rock and more experimental moments (the bleeping electronics of "give us the same" and the minute-long noise composition "gatz" immediately coming to mind), Anchors for Architects' sophomore outing is an inventive and sonically interesting offering. Certainly not destined for mainstream radio and almost undeniably more likely to appeal to those with more eclectic or experimental rock tastes (fans of Sonic Youth, for example, may find the band's sound intriguing), Dirty Settlements will likely prove an interesting listen for those whose musical leanings are a bit left of center.
