ARTIST: Jetstream Lovers ALBUM: Voodoo Nature EP LABEL: Line Out Records REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 7-4-07 Jetream Lovers is the new project from Goteki members Ross Tregenza, Ali Star, and Edy Green, and if this EP is an accurate indicator of the new band's direction, Goteki fans are going to be in for a bit of a surprise. While the electronic elements are still in place, Jetstream Lovers' influences owe less to England's underground rave scene than early '80s synthpop and '70s glam rock. "Meteor" in particular hints at Bowie influences in Tregenza's arch but catchy vocal delivery, and "Vietnam" is rather like Pscyhe's more recent output with its simple but memorable arrangement of piano and fuzzy guitar. Despite some promising tracks, however, there's also a lot of less substantial material. "Vanessa" is a decent but throw-away pop track, good for a little fun but not much else, and "All That She Wants," a cover of Ace of Base's hit, is funny enough, but only the first time you hear it. This isn't bad for an EP, and Goteki fans will want to check this out for curiosity's sake, but everyone else might be better off waiting to see if the band's first full-length is a little less uneven.
