Artist: The Color Guard CD Title: Speech for Heated Hearts Label: Suizblade Reviewer: Julie Johnson Date: August 1, 03 |
The Color Guard rips and roars through their 8 song CD titled, "Speech for Heated Hearts". At the time the CD was recorded there were three girls and one guy behind the drums, but now there are two girls and two guys, so I wanted to that these girls kick some ass with their guitar and bass playing. Their sound can be described as a mesh of good punk like qualities, thrashing metal guitar, and layered dark pop hook. It reminds me of more punkish Breeders, but this more metal guitars. The Color Guard creates a big sound. I also like how they have captured almost an eighties sound to their music. The vocals have a more -higher melodie, but that gives it the more edgy feel for the band. As for songs, "Speech for Heated Hearts, ( the jaguar song)" has great melodies, and great rock guitar that really stretches, and the bass that lurks. I really like how they bring out the guitar, it seems to really build during the song. The band totally rocks out during the song. The next song, "You Haul" has this thick guitar grind and then the vocal melodies sore into this more dreamy sound. The guitars have this nice sonic and distorted feel as well that is a good quality for this song. Other songs worth mentioning, would be " Wreck my Tea", that has this more sweet sound at times, with bells, but still is right there in your face. I also like how you heard just a bit of make vocals at the very end of the song. I also liked "Superglue", it had this lullaby feel, and a rhyme. The Color Guard definitely has something good going for them with their wide range of sounds within the music. Lots of energy too!
