ARTIST: The Vox Jaguars ALBUM: The Vox Jaguars (EP) LABEL: Anodyne Records REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 12-13-09 Combining the best of old punk and old garage rock, The Vox Jaguars have burst onto the music scene with an impressive debut that comes off like some crazy hybrid of The Damned and The Velvet Underground, with maybe a hint of Jack White thrown in thanks to lead singer Jordy Topf's reedy yowls. "Song for the Girl" is '70s New York City punk rock with a hint of glam, like Richard Hell and The Voidoids crossed with the New York Dolls, "Wild Orphan" is raw garage rock laced with fuzzy keyboards, and "Homesick" is bouncy but sparse, breaking down into a raucous bridge of thumping drums and wailing guitars. An all the more impressive teaser given that half the band is still in high school, The Vox Jaguars are already giving bands like Jet and The Fratellis a run for their money. Punk meets garage meets old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, this EP is 100 percent fun. Check out the EP now, as the guys will probably be on a major label by this time next year.
