ARTIST: Roxy Epoxy and the Rebound ALBUM: Bandaids on Bullet Holes LABEL: Metropolis Records REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 3-11-09 Roxy Epoxy is back with her first release since the break-up of cult synthpop/punk act The Epoxies, and her new band debuts with a short but sweet collection of tunes that highlights her punk past while also expanding into New Wave territory. For punk fans, the bouncy guitar chords of "New Way," cutting riffs of "I Know, I Know," and the driving bass and shout-along chorus of "This Twist" will keep bodies bouncing and fists pumping, while synthpop fans will dig the airy pianos of "Dependence Leads Your Future" and infectious melodies of "Lola's Vision." Roxy and friends even throw a bone to the goths with the stark post-punk gloom of "1000," which features Joy Division songwriting and latter-day Siouxsie Sioux and The Banshees vocal production. Still, whatever style she's playing, it's Epoxy's voice that remains the real draw. Combining the throaty but artsy delivery of Lena Lovitch with the bad-ass swagger of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, she's as unmistakable as ever here, if a little more accomplished as a singer; even when she shrieks, Siouxsie Sioux-style, she manages to make it musical. Close enough to the spirit of The Epoxies but diverse enough to appeal to a much wider audience, this is sure to please long-time fans as well as garnering plenty of new ones.
