Stoned, low-fidelity indie rock at its best, The Transmissions' new album admirably transitions from mellow psychedelia to live sonic freak-out. Things start quietly enough with the moody vocals and fuzzy guitar effects of "I'll Run It," but by second track "The Dull Line" things are already hinting at the weirdness that is to come. First there's a hint of mellow eccentricity in the vein of Modest Mouse or a less in-your-face version of The Pixies, but the relaxed guitar distortion gradually gives way to dissonant improvisation. The hypnotic "Cold Lights Fire" gives a sturdy backbeat to wavering guitars, and "Radio Lights" alternates between languid jazziness and a crunchy psychedelia faintly reminiscent of Jane's Addiction. It's on the second half of the CD, though, that things really take off into uncharted territory. Recorded live, it starts off with jazzy art-rock, yelping vocals, and extended passages of chaotic feedback on "17," then moves into the even noisier "Head," with its tinkling yet abrasive guitar noise and echoing shouts. "Bet the Mood" finishes on a less gritty note, but is nonetheless fairly out there by conventional pop standards, with extended droning effects that were certain to have hipster heads bobbing in time. Good stuff, especially if you like your alternative rock on the noisy side, and from what's indicated here, they put on a wild live show, so be sure to see them when they play your town.
