Fornever- Ghosthouse

With Fornever's latest release, Grave Concerns' own Joshua Heinrich offers up some gorgeously depressive pop somewhere between Slowdive and the Jesus and Mary Chain, but neither as drowsy as the former nor noisy as the latter. Heinrich has actually been at this for quite a while, releasing numerous albums from his home studio, and unlike many home studio projects, Heinrich is not only a decent songwriter, but also a fine producer. There's very little in the way of that muddled "garage sound," and any muffling or distorting effects seem to be very much intentional. Instead of taking the easy way out and doing everything electronically, Heinrich's sound is dominated by real guitars, with the pop hooks of "I'll Meet You There" and languidly moody album opener "Dusk" being particularly bright examples. While most of these songs tend towards a more laid back shoegaze feel, there are more danceable moments, like "Ghosthouse" and "Sunlight," both of which combine electronic rhythms and delicate guitar work in a style reminiscent of old Clan of Xymox. Still, this album is less about dance music than honest-to-god songwriting, and Heinrich has that in spades. With sixteen tracks and over an hour of music, this is definitely worth your while, especially if you were ever a fan of the 4AD sound. Highly recommended.
