"The Orphanage" tells the story of a woman named Laura, who decided to return to her loving childhood home, an orphanage, which she stayed happily there until the she was adopted. Now married to her husband Carlos, and with a son named Simón, Laura dreams of restoring the abandoned orphanage to its previous beauty, and open it for children who are disabled.
Strange and unexplainable occurrences in the house begin to plague Laura and her family, most especially with Simón, who appears to be communicating with his imaginary friends more than what would be considered appropriate. Tragedy strikes the family when Simón goes missing, and the house becomes more unsettling. Laura seeks help with a group of parapsychologists to help her unlock the dark secrets that consume the home, and Simón. Staring Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep and Geraldine Chaplin; directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.
I got razor-sharp shivers, and goose bumps popping up over most of my skin from reading about the premise of the story, and watching the trailer. Now that's darn creepy…what will the movie do to me when I see all of it? "The Orphanage" looks like it quite possibly could be the breakout film of originality, suspense, fear, humanity, and visual eeriness unlike any ghost story of its kind.
"The Orphanage" will reopen its doors on Friday, January 11th, 2008.
