Interviews Horror-Punk, Gothbilly Interview- Cult of the Psychic Fetus

Cult of the Psychic Fetus

by Julie Johnson

Feb 2001

Julie: How have you made your mark on the horror punk scene with your dark spooky sound?

Cult of the Psychic Fetus: WELL, I DON'T THINK WE SET OUT TO MAKE A MARK ON THE SCENE. THERE REALLY WASN'T A SCENE WHEN WE FIRST STARTED OUT BACK IN THE EARLY 90'S. I THINK IF ANYTHING, OUR MUSIC IS ORIGINAL AND WE HAVE OUR OWN UNIQUE SOUND. UNLIKE MOST OF THE QUOTE UNQUOTE GOTH-A-BILLY BANDS THAT HAVE CROPPED UP IN THE PAST FEW YEARS.

Julie: How has your band helped the scene grow? THERE'S THAT WORD 'SCENE'

Dult of: AGAIN. WE ARE NOT AT ALL CONCERNED WITH THIS SCENE OR ANY OTHER SCENE. AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED WE ARE DOING OUR OWN THING. OUR SCENE IS THE CHURCH OF THE PSYCHIC FETUS AND ALL OF ITS CONGREGATION.

Julie: Do you think this scene is stronger now because of your band? YES

Julie: What kind of things are you doing to make your music the best this this gothabilly category?

Cult of: I HAVE BEEN WRITING FOR THIS BAND LONG BEFORE THEY COINED THE TERM 'GOTH-A-BILLY.' I CERTAINLY DO NOT SIT DOWN TO WRITE A SONG TO FIT INTO ANY GENRE. IN FACT I WILL NOT LISTEN TO MUSIC AT ALL WHEN I AM WRITING. I DO NOT WANT TO BE INFLUENCED BY ANY OTHER ARTIST. I'LL SIT DOWN AND WATCH HORROR MOVIES OR HAVE MIDNIGHT PICNICS AT THE LOCAL GRAVEYARD. I GET MY INSPIRATION FROM THE DEAD.

Julie: How does your intense energy helped your success, especially with songs like Dead Bride and Coffin Beggar?

Cult of: WELL, WE ARE CERTAINLY NOT ONE OF THEM BANDS THAT THROW IN A CD AND PLUG IN THEIR KEYBOARDS AND LET THE MACHINES DO ALL THE WORK. WE ARE DRUMS, BASS AND GUITAR. HIGH ENERGY IS A MUST WHEN YOU STRIP YOUR SELF DOWN TO THE BASIC FRAME WORK OF ROCK AND ROLL

Julie: Where did your interest in gothabilly start?

ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE TERM. WE JUST ENJOY WRITING SONGS ABOUT DEATH

Julie: What would your say is your biggest influence for your song writing?

Cult of: HORROR, MURDER, DEATH ETC...

Julie: Are you fans of Anne Rice, and anything of hers influence you as a band?

Cult of: YES / NO, NOT AT ALL

Julie: You have been on many compilations, how have they been working out for you especially the one on Scully Records?

IT HELPS TO EXPOSE

Julie: Who have people compared your vocals too the most?

PROBABLY LUX INTERIOR OR ELVIS ON HEROIN Julie: Can you tell me more about the bands phantom guitar sound that stands out, and is very creepy?

Cult of:GHASTLY SOLD HIS SOUL FOR THEM LICKS
