Interviews Alternative, Indie Rock Interview- Kill Hannah

Band: Kill Hannah
Interviewer: Jules Cohen
Date: 12/14/03

JC: Hey Mat-Thanks soo much for doing this interview . The reason for today's interview is that 5 yrs young- Graveconcernsezine.com loves your voice and tunes and wants to share your music with our readership. Thanks for your time to answer a few questions for us about KILL HANNAH!

JC- You mention in your press your recent influences for your pop/edgy sound ..but what are your influences from your childhood, teenage hood. what bands really got you intersted in pursuing a band of your own?

Mat(lead singer of Kill hannah- U2, pixies, the cult, the cure, sex pistols, depeche mode, the smiths... once i got over def lepard in 6th grade, these are the bands i listened to religiously.

JC- *giggle* I think everyone went through a Def Leppard phase. You have terrific influences. I know some of them are my own personal faves.

JC-What kind of sound does the Chicago scene have and had that that sound help shape Kill Hannah?

Mat- Besides the Smashing pumpkins, the "sound of chicago" hasnt really had that much effect on the sound of KH. it has more to do with the weather and aesthetic of the city itself.

JC-I love how Kill Hannah got it's name and that you are still in touch with Hannah. Does she like the sound of the band, and does she take any credit for where you have gotten today.

Mat-I dont really know. she's quite insane.

JC-Will you be playing in NYC...we have some Graveconcerns fanship here and we'd love to see you?

Mat-we're playing tonight at irving plaza and tomorrow at stone pony in NJ. you MUST come out.

JC- I just literally heard this yesterday. That's soo great. Those are super venues and we are sure people will be smitten with your sound and presence.

JC-As a fellow recording artist...it's always an adventure with our bandmates, rehersals, planning shows, etc. How has that journey been for you. Are you a tight knit group...who are the leaders in the band...who does most of the songwriting...etc?

Mat-We are like family. A strange, beautiful all-male family. but it wasnt always so. We went through MANY line up changes before we felt complete.

JC- I remember some of that with my own bands. It's neat to see the band evolve and grow. And how nice...voila...you can now say you feel complete. That soo comes across in your music.

JC-My personal faves off of your major label release are Kenndy, No One dreams anyway,New heart for Xmas and Raining all the time. I like the edgy almost gothic/The Cure type sound. Do you guys see yourself fitting in there...because everyone interprets music and style differently. What would you say your sound is most like?

Mat- I've always related most to those bands that wore black.. the moody ones, you know? but i just hate the 'goth' label because it is SO played out and SO limiting... i just say we're modern rock.

JC- That's a nice place to fit and I soo agree with you now being familiar with your music. It is actually a place that appeals to many...people into goth, alt pop and related genres.

JC-was it exciting knowing that your cd would and can be found in major Music venues...how has that been since For Never & Ever was released?

Mat-I love it. In some case we come into towns for the first time and there are great big window displays for the record.

JC- That's soo awesome. What a feeling of accomplishment that must be!

JC-What plans are in the works for Kill hannah...f/up cd, dvd, tours, etc?

Mat-As far as i know, we're going to tour for the rest of our lives.. (i've already sold all my possessions) we're also shooting a video in December.

C- *giggles* Cool plan. JC-Thanks soo much Mat and your awesome band Kill Hannah.
